in the service of TBSr
Named in honor of one of the original founders and Chair of TBSr, Don Krueger. The award is presented annually to deserving members that have helped shape TBSr into a vibrant, collaborative forum for Business School IT Leaders.
2013: Awarded to Don Krueger
Don Krueger has 30 years' industry experience in IT and human resources leadership and consulting, including nine years with IBM. Don retired from San Francisco State University as Director of Projects and Planning in 2013 and has since devoted his professional time to consulting engagements. From 2002-2007, Don was Director of Technology for the Labovitz School of Business and Economics at the University of Minnesota Duluth. From 2003-2006 Don chaired the Technology in Business Schools Roundtable (TBSr), a consortium of technology leaders in business schools; Don also chaired the AACSB Technology Leaders Affinity Group during that time. Don was CIO for the College of Veterinary Medicine at The Ohio State University from 2007-2011. Don holds a B.S. from the UC Santa Barbara, M.S. from the UW Madison, and an MA in Policy and Administration from UM Twin Cities in the topic of IT governance and policy in higher education. In 2011, Don received his PMP certification from Project Management Institute.
2014: Awarded to Ginger Breon
Ginger is the Assistant Dean for Administration and Chief Information Officer (CIO) for the Smeal College of Business at Penn State. Ginger manages the AACSB Continuous Improvement Accreditation Renewal process for the College and oversees its buildings’ infrastructure. Additionally, she is responsible for developing and implementing the information technology strategy for the College to have a transformative impact on research and learning. Ginger is a member of the College’s Leadership Team for establishing and implementing strategic goals.
Ginger is a founding member and former Chair of Technology in Business Schools (TBSr) Roundtable. At Penn State, she was founding member and first Chair of the IT Leadership Council. The Council ensures IT goals and strategic plans align with those of the University. Ginger has presented at the annual meetings of The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, Educause, and TBSr.
2015: Awarded to John Carpenter
John Carpenter serves as the Chief Technology Officer at the McDonough School of Business (MSB), a post he assumed in May 1994. Previously, as a Commander in the U.S. Navy he held positions in Information Technology as Chief Information Officer at the National Defense University and as Head, Office Systems Branch at the Navy Military Personnel Command in Washington DC. Carpenter served for 22 years as a U.S. Navy pilot with warfare specialties in Anti-Submarine Warfare, Computer Systems Management, and Naval Technical Intelligence.He grew up as the son of a U.S. Navy pilot living in dozens of locations. He earned an undergraduate degree in Geology from the University of Oklahoma and a master’s degree in Information Systems from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterrey, California.
MSB maintains an independent Information Technology staff at Georgetown providing “soup-to-nuts” IT services to 3,000+ students, faculty, and staff. During his time as CTO of the McDonough School Mr. Carpenter has coordinated IT support for the school during a period of significant increase in enrollment and reputation.
Mr. Carpenter is a founding member of the Technology in Business Schools Roundtable (TBSr) and has served as both Board Member and Chairman of TBSr. He and his family live now in Annandale, Virginia.
2016: Awarded to Robert (Bob) Cavanagh
Robert (Bob) Cavanagh has 38 years of experience in IT management. From 2000 to 2009 he was Director of Technology for the Queen’s School of Business (now the Smith School of Business) at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Bob held director-level positions with the Government of Ontario from 1991 to 2000 and senior positions within the central IT function at Queen’s University from 1975 to 1991.
Bob attended the first TBS Roundtable meeting in 2004 at Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota, and has served as a Board Member and Secretary of the TBSr until his retirement in 2009. Throughout his association with TBS Bob championed the use of online collaboration tools to promote sharing of experiences and ideas among the members of the organization.
Over his career Bob has been privileged to work with other Canadian IT leaders to bring advanced research networks to Canada including NetNorth (Bitnet), CDNnet (X.400 network) and CA*net (Canada’s first national research network). He has been recognized for his contribution to the founding and building of the “dot ca” domain, Canada’s address on the Internet.
Since his retirement he has remained active in his community, volunteering with local organizations to provide web design, development and maintenance services, and as a member of boards of directors.
2017: Awarded to Brad Hunt
Brad serves as the Executive Director of IT for the University of Georgia's Terry College of Business. Brad began his career with Chevron Corporation as a Petroleum Engineer and quickly shifted to the Information Technology field when personal computers become popular in the mid-1980s. Brad has worked at all levels of IT organizations, beginning as a PC Support Specialist and progressing to CIO with TengizChevroil, a Chevron joint venture company located in Kazakhstan. Other international assignments include a three-year resident assignment in Lagos, Nigeria and other project related activities that crossed cultural and international boundaries.
Brad has been a member of the Technology in Business Schools Roundtable since 2006. Brad served as a TBSr director from 2010-2016 and was board chair 2011-2015. During Brad’s board tenure, TBSr experienced a 100% growth in membership and launched the External Review Process to enhance the value of TBSr membership.
2018: Awarded to Roger Salomon
Roger serves as the Director of Technology Support Services for the School of Business (SBUS) at Montclair State University. Many of Roger's projects--including classroom re-design, visualizations of servers and desktops, centralized faculty and staff backups, managed digital signage, etc.--have developed into campus-wide deployments.
"After attending the first "birds-of-feather" meet-up at Educause 11 years prior and attending the first TBSr meeting at Georgetown, TBSr has become invaluable to my work. The wide range of ideas and input provide me with multiple options and views, and help me make well informed decisions. What makes this organization even more amazing, is that we all speak the same language, have dealt with the same issues and have gone through the same heartaches, whether you're from Indiana University or Montclair State. My work on the board has been time consuming, especially as treasurer, but it is simply my way of giving back to this great organization."
Roger served as a TBSr Board Member from 2012 - 2018 and as Treasurer from 2014-2018.
2019: Awarded to Tony Balsamo
Tony Balsamo, TBSr Emeritus, formerly the Director of Information Services at the Olin Business School at Washington University in St. Louis. Tony was a member of TBSr for 11 years, served on the TBSr board for five years, and hosted the 2016 TBSr Annual Meeting at his institution. Tony recently moved over to the central IT department at WashU. Prior work history includes 15 years in corporate consulting, mainly at Accenture. His focus was the Communications industry; mainly process change, software development and implementation, and technical architecture. Tony was a thought leader within our community, a frequent collaborator and a mentor for many in our organization.
